The ABSW announced the finalists in the ABSW Awards 2025 this Monday May 19, 2025. Judges evaluated 277 entries in 11 categories to decide on the 46 finalists. This wasn’t an easy task, noted Martin Ince, chair of the judging panel.
Not for the first time, we are in awe of the number and quality of the entries that we were called upon to assess. They are proof that the UK and Ireland produce terrific science writing for every imaginable medium, in every possible format, and for every community of interest here and around the world.
For those that didn't make it as a finalist you are all commended for your contribution to science and technology journalism in 2024 and I hope you continue to produce such varied, vital and insightful work in 2025 and beyond.
Martin Ince thanked the other judges for their commitment. “I am grateful to the judges for the time and effort they put into choosing the finalists and winners, especially as they are – of course – not allowed to enter.”
Of note this year was the newcomer category, where the judges said:
We were impressed with the quality of all entries and note how many of the entrants had been supported by ABSW activities, from summer school to 'meet the editor' sessions, and the Monthly showcase. The ABSW is to be commended for being a place for early-career journalists to flourish.
The ABSW Awards are open to entry throughout January each year. Winners will be announced at the annual Awards Ceremony, this year being held at the Royal Institution, London, on Wednesday, July 9. All ABSW members, finalists, judges and sponsors are invited to celebrate the very best in UK and Irish Science Journalism at the ceremony.
