“I absolutely was not expecting it, and to be presented the award by none other than the legendary Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock was totally surreal.”

The ABSW congratulates Catherine de Lange, editor at New Scientist and ABSW member, who was named New Editor of the Year by The British Society Magazine Editors (BSME), on 27 November. She was also voted Editors’ Editor of the Year by BSME members and entrants to the BSME Awards 2025.

“As nice as it is to receive awards, especially one which was peer-nominated, what really moved me was all the incredible things people had to say about New Scientist and how it has changed their lives. It is such a special place to work,” Catharine de Lange wrote on LinkedIn.

De Lange has been with New Scientist for a decade; she started as an intern and is now leading the team.

In her biography on the BSME website, De Lange recalls New Scientist’s agenda-setting year: from exposing the UK science tech secretary’s use of ChatGPT for policy advice via a precedent-setting FOI, to challenging claims of dire wolf “de-extinction.”

In a success for science reporting at large, de Lange and New Scientist triumphed over magazines focused on politics, social issues, culture or lifestyle in an award presented by Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock, a British space scientist and science educator. “In a room full of glamorous titles, I know science wasn’t the sexiest choice,” de Lange said.

The Association of British Science Writers is registered in England and Wales under company number 07376343 at 76 Glebe Lane, Barming, Maidstone, Kent, ME16 9BD.
