The European Science Journalist of the Year Award is now open for entries for work published in 2025. The award is co-ordinated by the European Federation for Science Journalism, of which the ABSW is a member.

Previously, the ABSW used to run an award called 'British Science Journalist of the Year' to select our nominee for the European Award, but this proved problematic for many reasons. The ABSW is therefore encouraging its members to enter the Award individually, and we will cover the cost of entry.

The prize honours reporting that informs and entertains the public, inspires new generations, innovates in storytelling, investigates and breaks exclusives, and demonstrates a clear impact on society.

Helen Pearson, journalist and editor for Nature and ABSW member, won the European Science Journalist of the Year award in 2025. Michael Peel, Financial Times’ science editor and also ABSW member, was the first runner-up. The third place went to Jonas Reese and Christopher Weingart, a joint entry nominated by the German association Wissenschaftspressekonferenz (WPK).
