Statement from the ABSW Board re the Ceremony
As you will be aware, Wednesday's forecast presents exceptional conditions, temperatures of 39°C and above in London. The ABSW Board has discussed this at length, and we want to be transparent with you about our thinking.
We debated with members' health and safety at the centre of our deliberations and were prepared to absorb the financial consequences of cancellation had that been the right call. Having reviewed all the information available to us, which included weighing logistics and costs, the ABSW board ultimately decided to proceed because the Royal Society, having assessed conditions for their venue and their own staff, has confirmed that the event will go ahead as planned.
We have been guided by their judgment as the venue holder, and we are satisfied that they are not treating this as business as usual without due consideration.
We ask that you check the travel announcements, take sensible precautions when travelling to and from Carlton House Terrace on Wednesday evening: stay hydrated, dress as lightly as the occasion allows, and please do not hesitate to let us know if you are feeling unwell at any point during the evening.
