ABSW members can sign up for an email address @absw.org.uk. It is a mail forwarding service. So you need your own account with someone else.

There are plenty of free accounts out there and an ABSW address is a way of using these without looking like a cheapskate.

Here's how it works:

• Pick the name you want. It will look like something"at"absw.org.uk
  If you plan to use something other than your name, we need to know who you are when you apply so that we can verify your membership, and eligibility.

• When you receive a message telling you that the account works, you have to do a few more things for everything to work smoothly. You will receive a message telling you how to go about this, or you can find the details here.

New improved email service

You now have the choice of forwarding messages to another account, or to use your @absw address with POP/SMTP or via web mail. The choice is yours. Even better, everything is now under your control via the web interface.

You can get at the service at this address:

It will ask for your username and password.

The username is the email address and the password is the one we sent you. Please change your password as soon as you receive it.

You will arrive at an easily negotiated web site. At the bottom you will see some more buttons:

The Options button gives you lots of control over what goes on. First go to the Login one and change your password. If you want to send messages to another account, go to Mailbox Redirection. The others are pretty self explanatory.

The addresses for the POP and SMTP servers are mail.absw.org.uk.

The username and password are the same as those you use to get into webmail (see above).

One thing you might like to do is to go to the Settings button and to tell it where you are in the Regional Settings slot. For some reason the default location is on the other side of the planet.

You can also experiment with the Spam Rules if you are unlucky enough to have let your email address fall into the wrong hands.

If you have any problems with your email, the ABSW's internet service provider, Netcetera, has a set of help pages. You will have to search for answers to your questions, but it is all pretty straightforward.
