Web sites for journalists

While many journalists jealously guard their contact books, they are not so mean minded that they will not share telephone numbers or web addresses.

This is where we hope to create a set of resources for science writers in a hurry.

Press Rooms

Publications that offer special access to journalists

Nature journals

press.nature.com

Clippings

A page on this site with a handful of links to sites that detail press coverage of science and medicine.

Journalism

Resources designed specifically for journalists

National Association of Science Writersnasw.org
Our colleagues in the USA.

Australian Science Communicators
www.asc.asn.au
And then there's the down-under mob.

European Union of Science Journalists' Associations
www.esf.org/eusja/index.htm
With links to various societies in Europe.

Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators
www.istc.org.uk/

"Established for more than 50 years, the ISTC is the largest UK body representing professional communicators and information designers."

The Media Network

Also has a useful set of links to organisations that offer training.

Journalism UK
www.journalismuk.co.uk/

"Journalism UK is aimed at print journalists writing for UK magazines or based in the UK, although broadcasters may find the news and other resources useful."
Also has a large but incomplete set of links to publications, news resources, etc.

FleetStreet
www.fleetstreet.org.uk
Really a newsgroup. But there is an associated web site with a set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) that cover many issues that are relevant to science journalism.
One of the managers, Wendy Grossman, is a member of the ABSW.

Life Sciences

Genelog
genelog.com

Eric Schoch, Director of New Media, Consumer Health Communications, at the Indiana University School of Medicine, created this weblog to monitor developments in genetics and genomics, and to provide independent reporting on those topics.

Medical dictionaries

While we all try to keep our own sets of reference books, it always helps to be able to compare sources, or to have links to new areas that we have to write about. The National Library of Medicine in US has a page given over to medical dictionaries. This has links to some multilingual sites that may be useful.

Statistics

Statistical Assessment Service
www.stats.org

"STATS is a non-profit
non-partisan think tank in Washington, D.C. examines the way that scientific, quantitative, and social research are presented by the media."

www.sree.net/stories/web.html

Improving Your Surfing: Better Use of Your Web Time
This is a link list for the class Sree teaches for journalists and other professionals.

Let us know if you come across a particularly interesting, useful or amusing site.
