ABSW-L is a virtual barroom where members of the association can chew
the fat, rant and rave, and seek help from their colleagues. It also has the
occasional job ad and details of ABSW events.
We have moved to a new e-home
The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory kindly housed ABSW-L when the
association decided to move into the e-era. The Council for the Central
Laboratory of the Research Councils picked up the baton when it came into
being. Now that CCLRC has merged with PPARC to become STFC, they are
changing computer systems.
As a result of this, we have to change the e-mail address for
ABSW-L. We took the opportunity to look for the best place to park a new
mailing list for members. It turns out that
Google Groups offers great flexibility for subscribers. You can keep in
touch by email, on the web or through and RSS feed.
After you fill this in, you will receive an email message with a link to
click. Answer the question you see, tell us who you are, and someone will
appro
e the application and let you in.
You have to go through these hoops because this is a closed list, open
only to members of the ABSW.
If you want to read the list on the web, and to manage your subscription
on line, you have to sign up for Google Groups with a valid email address.
You do not need a Google Account to use Google Groups, but that limits
the tools available to you.
Activities that don't require a Google Account:
- Reading posts in public groups
- Searching for groups, posts, or authors
- Posting to groups via email if they are unrestricted or you're
already a member
- Joining a public Google Group via email (but only "open" groups)
Activities that require a Google Account:
- Creating and managing your own Google Group
- Posting to groups via the web interface
- Creating pages and uploading files
- Subscribing to a Usenet newsgroup and receiving posts via email
- Joining a Google Group via the web interface
- Changing your subscription type (No Email, Abridged Email...)
- Reading a restricted group's posts online
Google will not share that email address with anyone. Indeed, those keen
on privacy might prefer working on the web site because
Google obscures email addresses "to prevent automated computer programs
from harvesting it for spamming purposes".
